Mercury Retrograde began on April 1st and continues until April 25th. In the world of business astrology, we often fear Mercury Retrograde due to anticipated tech hiccups or mishaps. So, what exactly do astrologers mean when they talk about Mercury Retrograde?
First, let’s clarify what we mean by Mercury in astrology. Astrologers believe that celestial bodies like the Moon, stars, planets, and the Sun influence events on Earth and that each planet in our Solar System governs a distinct aspect of life. In mythology, Mercury was the messenger of the gods. In our natal charts, Mercury represents how we think, speak, and process information, as well as indicating our preferred method of communication. For instance, a person born with their Mercury in Scorpio might desire deeper, more intense communication, whereas someone with Mercury in Aquarius may prefer discussing societal issues over personal matters. Additionally, the house that Mercury occupies at the time of our birth adds another layer, influencing the areas we are naturally drawn to discuss. My natal Mercury in Gemini, located in the seventh house, unsurprisingly makes it easy for me to discuss relationships.
We hear about Mercury Retrogrades more often than other planetary retrogrades because it is the fastest, completing an orbit around the Sun in only 88 days. Retrogrades occur when Mercury appears to move in the opposite direction of its usual path; however, this is an optical illusion since the planet’s orbit has not actually changed. In astrology, this can bring a jarring energy that forces us to slow down and can be chaotic.
A common misconception is that Mercury Retrograde forces us to make mistakes, like forgetting to include a link in a social media post. Instead, it provides an opportunity to become more aware of our communication because it is intensified. Our minds, always active and racing ahead, can benefit from this slower pace, allowing us to be more introspective about things we may have deemed unimportant, and to reconsider repetitive feelings and patterns that arise during Mercury Retrograde.
Practically, Mercury Retrograde can help us become more conscientious in our interactions. For example, you might want to send a test email to yourself before distributing it to your list. Rather than blaming Mercury Retrograde for sending a text to an ex, take a moment to reflect on what’s happening internally. If your computer is refusing to update software, perhaps you need to commit to a new model.
We need to anticipate delays and misunderstandings without panic. Don’t be alarmed if devices like Alexa or Siri malfunction when you’re in a rush. If you have travel plans, allow extra time for potential issues. While communication mishaps are common, actions such as ghosting someone are personal choices. Most importantly, Mercury Retrograde offers a spiritual opportunity to explore underlying causes of persistent patterns in our lives.
