Do you have an ugly room in the house that you’re thinking of renovating? I have thought about renovating my ‘ugly’ kitchen, which I was recently reminded of as I flipped through some of my home-decorating magazines. These magazines always feature picture perfect homes with rooms that are so spotless they don’t even look lived in. The couples that live in these gorgeous homes appear just as picture perfect and happy.
Anyone looking at these images could easily think that they would be just as happy as the couples in the magazine if they too renovated their homes to appear just as picture perfect. This is not true. In an editorial that accompanied some of the picture perfect renovation images, it was revealed that soon after these rooms were renovated the couples involved separated or divorced.
These couples hope that somehow by having these renovations done to their homes that their relationships will also be renovated and that they will find happiness. Also not true.
Before you decide to renovate your home or make any big decisions ask yourself what your motivation is. If you are renovating for reasons other than the room is ugly or not functional, then you need to also ask yourself if you will really be happy if you have that room renovated.
Instead of jumping into a renovation, figure out what is it within yourself that needs to change that will truly make you more fulfilled and happier. That is the work that is worth investing in.
Renovating your home can be an incredible experience, but make sure your relationship is solid before taking on such a big task. For more insight into relationships, visit me on Facebook, Twitter or sign up for my email series.
